The Firewire 400 (1394a) interface is one of the most common interfaces available in professional audio and video workflows. The 40MB/s data transfer rate (click here for more on data transfer rates) is faster than USB and allows for easy connection to broacast and studio equipment, such as cameras, recording decks, non-linear editing equipment and media servers. It is also the ideal connection for Apple MAC computers. Adapters are available that allow connection to FW800 and 4-pin i-Link 1394a ports. The Firewire cable also provides power from FW400 and FW800 ports, so for most computers and systems no external power supply is required.
